Introduction to the Department of Joint Replacement and Trauma Surgery
The Department of Joint Replacement and Trauma Surgery of the 3rd Affiliated Hospital is famous for minimally invasive trauma surgery, arthroscope surgery and joint replacement in the province and nation. Under the leadership of Professor Kun Wang, the department has become an influential clinical department and research team in China integrating the medical service, education and scientific research. It is awarded the honor of key department in the hospital and clinical key specialty in Guangdong province. Our treatment covers orthopedic trauma, degenerative osteoarthritis, sports medicine, bone tumor, and joint replacement. It also includes minimally invasive arthroscope surgery for a variety of joint diseases. We are the earliest clinical department in the Southern China to start the first arthroscope surgery. Until now, we have completed more than 5,000 cases of arthroscope surgeries and 2000 cases of joint replacements, which have become the regular treatments in our department. Our joint replacement techniques has received wide recognition from domestically and international colleagues.
At present, we have 49 inpatient beds and comprehensive advanced medical facilities. There are 14 specialists and 16 well-trained nurses. Among the specialists, there are 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 4 attending physicians and 7 residents. All of them have graduated degree in medicine and 3 of them are graduate student supervisors.
Diagnosis and treatments
We performed surgery on various orthopedic diseases, including the degenerative osteoarthritis, fracture of the extremities, orthopedic deformities, bone tumors, and sports medicine. The following are the major procedures performed by our surgeons.
1. Joint replacement
Total Hip Replacement (THR) for femoral neck fracture, avascular necrosis of femoral head, developmental dysplasia of hip, ankylosing spondylitis, etc. Total Knee Replacement (TKA) for degenerative knee arthritis, rheumatoid knee arthritis, valgus/varus knee, knee stiffness, etc. Shoulder Arthroplasty for comminuted proximal humerus fracture, avascular necrosis of humerus head, rheumatoid shoulder arthritis, etc.
2. Arthroscope Surgery
We specialized in a number of minimally invasive arthroscope surgeries, including knee arthroscope for anterior/posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, meniscal tear repair, cartilage repair, synovectomy, patellofemoral joint disorders, etc. Shoulder arthroscope for Bankart lesion repair, SLAP lesion repair, periarthritis of shoulder, rotator cuff injury, etc. Wrist arthroscope for ganglions, triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) repair, wrist arthritis, etc. Currently, most of the joint diseases can be treated by these procedures.
3. Minimally Invasive Trauma Surgery
Minimally invasive trauma surgery such as minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) has become the regular treatment in our department. Compared with the conventional open surgery, minimally invasive trauma surgery has demonstrated significant advantages, such as smaller incision, less hemorrhage, shorter length of stay and less complications.
4. Bone Tumor Resection and Arthroplasty
We are experienced in the resection of huge bone tumor and the reconstruction of functions of extremities by arthroplasty. We had improved the survival rate and the accuracy of prognosis of sensitive tumor combining the application of chemotherapy and biological targeted therapy..
