The Department of Medical Oncology at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University is a comprehensive oncology specialty integrating clinical practice, medical education, and scientific research. Affiliated with a national Grade III-A hospital, the department adheres to the philosophy of "standardized and individualized" cancer care, providing diagnostic and comprehensive therapeutic services for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. The department is also committed to cultivating medical professionals and advancing basic and clinical oncology research to drive innovation and translational applications in cancer treatment.

Organizational Structure and Faculty

The Department operates across three campuses—Tianhe, Luogang, and Zhaoqing—with a total of 65 beds. All inpatient wards are equipped with fully digitalized safety management systems, offering a comfortable therapeutic environment and high-quality patient experience. The department maintains standardized outpatient clinics and specialty laboratories, providing robust infrastructure for clinical practice and research translation.

The faculty comprises 23 physicians, including 1 Professor/ Chief Physician, 4 Chief Physicians, 6 Associate Chief Physicians, 2 Attending Physicians, and 10 Resident Physicians. All physicians hold doctoral or master's degrees from prestigious domestic medical institutions, possessing solid theoretical foundations and extensive clinical expertise.

1. Standardized and Individualized Cancer Treatment

The department strictly follows annually updated clinical guidelines from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO). A comprehensive multidisciplinary case conference system has been established, ensuring that all newly admitted patients undergo thorough multidisciplinary evaluation and receive individualized treatment plans within a standardized therapeutic framework.

2.Disease-Specific Specialization

The department implements a disease-specific physician responsibility system, wherein designated physicians are assigned to oversee treatment protocol updates, clinical research advancement, and frontier progress monitoring for specific malignancies. This structure ensures that the diagnostic and therapeutic standards for each disease type meet the criteria of specialized oncology institutions.

3.Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment

- Gastrointestinal Malignancies: Gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatobiliary malignancies, pancreatic cancer, etc.

- Thoracic Malignancies: Lung cancer, etc.

- Hematologic Malignancies: Lymphoma, etc.

- Other Solid Tumors: Head and neck malignancies, genitourinary malignancies, breast cancer, soft tissue sarcomas, etc.

4.Specialized Certifications

As a  National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, the department actively engages in clinical research projects focusing on hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal malignancies, participating in multiple domestic multicenter clinical trials to provide patients with access to cutting-edge therapeutic opportunities. The department has been designated as:

-Guangdong Provincial Model Ward for Standardized Cancer Pain Management, with extensive experience in standardized pain treatment and complex cancer pain management.

- Zero-Emesis Model Ward, implementing standardized management of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) to enhance patient treatment tolerance.

Nursing Specialties

The nursing team adheres to a "patient-centered" philosophy, with "service, quality, and safety" as core tenets. Emphasizing humanistic care, the team delivers specialized oncology nursing services. The nursing staff includes oncology specialist nurses, nutrition specialist nurses, case managers, and palliative care specialist nurses, providing comprehensive and professional nursing care throughout the cancer journey.

Furthermore, the department serves as a Venous Therapy Practice Education Base and an Implantable Vascular Access Device (Port) Implantation Training Base, holding a leading regional position in vascular access establishment and maintenance. The department performs over 1,000 arm port implantation procedures annually, demonstrating mature techniques and low complication rates, providing safe and reliable vascular access for long-term intravenous therapy in cancer patients.
